About Look East Farm
Susan and Phil Harris looked for a property to “save” from demolition for over two years with no success. “One day we drove up the driveway of this house and saw the porch,” said Susan, “It is the ‘room’ of the house that we live in the most, almost year-round.” They spent a year renovating. But it’s a 100 plus year-old home and “care of an old house is a never-ending act of love,” Susan said. They kept as much of the original home as possible to conserve natural resources, save landfill space, and preserve the beauty of the original building materials, which were largely milled from the 150-acre original farm.
Susan and Phil also met the grandson of the man that started building this home in 1917 and formed a wonderful friendship based on the love of the farm. “He gave us pieces of furniture that his grandfather had in our home and because his grandmother had red geraniums throughout the house and on the porch, we do as well,” said Susan.
The name Look East Farm comes from the orientation of the home and from a bible verse that references coming from the East, which Susan explains is a reminder to us to live a life of thoughtful preparation.
Look East Farm is protected by a conservation easement with The Nature Conservancy. Susan Harris is on the Virginia Eastern Shore Land Trust Board of Directors.
